' ' We sincerely hope that the chapter will cease to designate its incoming members in any such way. The dog is a noble animal but he is not a man, and a puppy is playful and affectionate but he is yet but a dog. Such nicknames strikes us unpleasantly. = At many colleges, when a student does not graduate, in all items in college publications referring to him thereafter, he is designated as John Doe, e% '17, or whatever his class may be. Some of our chapters have adopted the same nomenclature. We hope they will drop it forthwith. Naturally a man likes to graduate with his class, but many unfortunately do not. It is humilitating and unpleasant for a non-graduate to ever afterwards be referred to as " ex. " We have heard so many expressions of displeasure at the practice that we now comment upon it. Many colleges keep no track of their non-graduate alumni thereby losing their adherence and support. Some few colleges have been wise enough to do so and have profited greatly thereby, but if a college wants to alienate its non-graduates all they have to do is continually prefix "Ex" before their class numerals. During the rushing season there is often a tendency to make comparisons between the chapter rolls of different fraternities. Of course such comparison is valueless. An old fraternity with no inactive chapters simply advertises itself as having been unenterprising. A new one may have no inactive chapters and yet be lamentably weak. There are usually good reasons why any chapter ceases to be active. Sometimes there is no good reason. But whether the causes of chapter inactivity be good or bad, there is nothing to be gained...
